Understanding self-employed taxes in Spain
VAT, income tax and contributions: a simple map of your obligations as a freelancer.

Being self-employed in Spain means living with three main obligations. Understanding them from day one avoids surprises.
The three pieces
- VAT: the tax you charge on your invoices and report each quarter.
- Income tax (IRPF): many freelancers prepay it through form 130.
- Self-employed contribution: your monthly Social Security payment.
Quarterly calendar
Quarterly forms are filed in April, July and October by the 20th; Q4 is the exception and files between 1 and 30 January instead.
Set aside a percentage of every invoice for taxes. That way nothing catches you off guard.
With a simple organising system, these obligations become routine rather than a source of stress.
